Muay Thai Day – February 6 of Every Year
February 6 each year is designated as “Muay Thai Day” in honor of King Sanphet VIII, also known as “Phra Chao Suea” (The Tiger King), who is revered as the Father of Muay Thai. The day celebrates Muay Thai as Thailand’s national martial art and a treasured cultural wisdom heritage.
(Feb 6, 2026) February 6 has been officially recognized as Muay Thai Day to honor Muay Thai as both a martial art and a national cultural heritage. The aim is to promote preservation and transmission from generation to generation, while also elevating Muay Thai to the global stage through various activities. A key location for these events is Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, which serves as a central hub for the celebrations.
The date was chosen because it marks the coronation day of King Sanphet VIII (Phra Chao Suea) of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. He is honored as the Father of Muay Thai due to his exceptional skill and royal patronage of the art.
The Thai Cabinet has officially approved February 6 as Muay Thai Day to affirm the uniqueness and cultural continuity of this tradition. The Ministry of Culture and the Department of Cultural Promotion have also registered Muay Thai as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage under the category of Thai wisdom in sports. This recognition helps raise awareness and promote Thailand’s cultural image internationally.
Key activities on Muay Thai Day include:
Wai Kru and Kruap Kru ceremonies to pay respect to teachers and masters
Demonstrations of Mae Mai Muay Thai (traditional techniques) and ancient Muay Thai styles
Educational exhibitions and knowledge sharing
Participation from international fighters and enthusiasts, highlighting Muay Thai as a form of Thai soft power
Although another date, March 17, is sometimes mentioned as “Boxer’s Day” or linked to the legend of Nai Khanom Tom, the official national day honoring Muay Thai is February 6
